Gustavus Faculty Recital Features Leibundguth and Wang

The Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College is pleased to present two of its faculty members, Flutist Barbara Leibundguth and Pianist Esther Wang, in a faculty recital on Saturday, March 22 in Björling Recital Hall. This performance by Leibundguth and Wang is free and open to the public and begins at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday’s faculty recital opens with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata in A Major, BWV 1032 and continues with a solo performance by Barbara Leibundguth of Richard Rodney Bennett’s Six Tunes for the Instruction of Singing-birds, for solo flute. The three-movement Sonata, op. 52 by Charles Koechlin will follow and the recital concludes with Franz Doppler’s Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise, op. 26.

Barbara Leibundguth, flutist and adjunct instructor of flute at Gustavus, has performed as principal flutist with major orchestras in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Houston, and was a member of the Minnesota Orchestra for twenty years, including fourteen years as co-principal. A Chicago native, Leibundguth graduated from Northwestern University, where her teachers were Walfrid Kujala and Donald Peck of the Chicago Symphony, Susan Levitin, and French flutist Marcel Moyse. She attended the Marlboro, Blossom, and Grand Teton summer festivals, and has been featured on radio broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion and NPR’s Performance Today.

Esther Wang, pianist and associate professor of music at Gustavus, is an active soloist and collaborator throughout the United States. As a chamber musician, Wang has collaborated with members of the New York Philharmonic, the LaSalle String Quartet, the Maia Quartet, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra,The Cleveland Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra. Wang received the Bachelor of Music at Baylor University, where she studied with Roger Keyes. She continued her studies with Frank Weinstock at the University of Cincinnati, earning the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. She also studied privately with renowned pianist Lilian Kallir and attended the Tanglewood, Kneisel Hall, and Taos Chamber Music summer festivals. In the summer, she teaches at the Interlochen Arts Camp and the Adamant Music School (VT).

This March 22 faculty recital by Flutist Barbara Leibundguth and Pianist Esther Wang will be presented in Björling Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public. It will begin at 7:30 p.m.
