Pianists Sowden and Stauffer to Present Piano Recital

Gustavus Adolphus College pianists Phil Sowden and Beth Stauffer will present their junior recital on Sunday, December 11 in Bjorling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. This event, open to the public at no charge, begins at 3:30 p.m.

Gustavus Adolphus College pianists Phil Sowden and Beth Stauffer will present their junior recital on Sunday, December 11 in Bjorling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. This event, open to the public at no charge, begins at 3:30 p.m.

Sowden and Stauffer, both students of Professor Esther Wang, will join forces to present solo works for piano as well as a combined effort at the end of the recital to present Scaramouche, a two-piano, three-movement work by Darius Milhaud.

Beth Stauffer, a 2003 graduate of Armstrong Senior High School and daughter of Lou Ann and Dennis Stauffer of Plymouth, will open the program with a Felix Mendelssohn work, Song Without Words in E major. She continues with Brahms’ Drei Intermezzi and a set of three works by Debussy, Bartok and Barber.

Phil Sowden, a 2003 graduate of Park Center High School and the son of Jeff and Barb Sowden of Brooklyn Park, will present an opening work by Frederic Chopin, Etude in C major, followed by the Nocturne No. 4 in E-flat major by Gabriel Faure. Prior to the two-piano finale, Sowden will present George Gershwin’s I Got Rhythm and Isaac Albeniz’s Cantos de Espana.

The Stauffer and Sowden piano recital is free and open to the public. A reception for the recitalists follows the performance in the recital hall lobby.
