Sunday Faculty Recital to Feature Flutist James DeVoll

The Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College is pleased to present the second faculty recital of the weekend with a performance by flutist James DeVoll on Sunday, February 28 at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. DeVoll will be assisted in Sunday’s recital by cellist Sharon Mautner-Rodgers and pianist Beth Winterfeldt in this recital which will be presented free and open to the public.

James DeVoll joined the faculty of Gustavus in the fall of 2011, where he teaches flute and directs the flute choir. He has appeared in concerts and recitals throughout the United States and Europe. Locally he has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the South Dakota Symphony, the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, the La Crosse Symphony, and has worked with dozens of composers in the premieres of over 30 works. In Europe, he spent two summers working with composers at the Centre Acanthes festival for contemporary music in France. Other performances have included venues in England, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Germany, and throughout France. He has also performed at the National Flute Conventions in New York City and in Kansas City, where he was a winner of the 2008 Convention Performers Competition. In addition to Gustavus, he teaches at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis, and has been on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, Hamline University, the University of Minnesota–Morris, and has served as President of the Upper Midwest Flute Association (UMFA). James studied at Yale, the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), and the University of Minnesota, with additional studies in France.

For Sunday’s recital, Mr. DeVoll has selected a variety of works written for solo or accompanied flute. He will open the recital with Salvatore Sciarino’s All’aure in una lontananza, followed by a 2014 work by composer and Gustavus graduate Katherine Johns Bergman ’07, Phase Change and Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Assobio a játo (The Jet Whistle), accompanied by Sharon Mautner-Rodgers, cello. Following a brief intermission, Mr. DeVoll will return to the Björling Recital Hall stage with pianist Beth Winterfeldt to present Poem by Charles T. Griffes and Sonatine by Pierre Sancan.

Sunday’s faculty flute recital featuring James DeVoll with cellist Sharon Mautner-Rodgers and pianist Beth Winterfeldt will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. This performance is free and open to the public.
