A collection of new works by artist Cameron Jarvis will be on display in the Schaefer Gallery on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus May 5 – May 30. Sponsored by the Department of Art/Art History, 30mpg Zone: New Works by Cameron Jarvis will be open to the public at no charge from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily. Mr. Jarvis will present an artist lecture in the Fine Arts Lecture Room on the 2nd floor of the department on Thursday, May 5 at 4:30 p.m. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, May 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
This exhibition is a continuation of the ideas in Cameron Jarvis’ recent show at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral and his works in his senior show at the Hillstrom Museum of Art but, as Cameron wrote, “with a more specific theme. These paintings and prints use imagery from St. Peter and the Twin Cities to examine the concept of destination, and how St. Peter functions as a destination along Highway 169.” As the highway and motorists wind through downtown St. Peter, the town not only slows the traffic but offers both a visual and a physical oasis. The artist drew his work from his observations of the cityscape in the city’s buildings and the pedestrians who are part of the observation. As he explains, the work is both “Slow Here” and “Stop Here,” the titles of two of the linocuts to be included.
30mph Zone is also the culmination of a year-long internship in the Department of Art/Art History. Cameron has spent 8 months working as the Studio Lab Tech, assisting professors and working on a portfolio of new work. In his words, “The environment has been very conducive to making art and I have enjoyed the mentorship and critique of many artists in the department.”
Although he is still making the final decisions on which works to include in the Schaefer show, Cameron expects that the exhibition will include as many as 10 new works, including oil paintings and linocut prints.
