The annual Family Weekend at Gustavus is a favorite of the extended Gustavus community as the fall colors bring hundreds of family and friends to the campus. Sunday, October 9, is a special day for the College and the students in the Department of Music. This year many of the department’s choral and instrumental ensembles – including over 500 student musicians – will participate in events throughout the day. While it is hoped that everyone will attend Sunday’s afternoon concert, it’s understood that many can not. They can, however, watch morning worship and the concert live online at: http://portal.stretchinternet.com/gacadmin/
Sunday’s schedule will open with Morning Worship at 10:30 a.m. in Christ Chapel. Music ensembles, including the Choir of Christ Chapel, Brandon Dean and the Chapel Ringers, will participate in the service led by Christ Chapel Chaplains Siri Erickson and Brian Konkol and Organist Chad Winterfeldt. Morning worship is open to all members of the Gustavus community.
At 2:00 p.m, the Family Music Showcase will be presented in Christ Chapel. Conductor Gregory Aune and the Gustavus Choir will open Sunday’s concert with Odd Johan Overoye’s Praise to the Lord, Earth Song by Frank Ticheli, and Dan Forrest’s arrangement of I Know That My Redeemer Lives. They will conclude with F. Melius Christiansen’s beloved arrangement of Beautiful Savior. The Choir will be followed by the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Ruth Lin with performances of Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor: Overture and 2 movements of Karelia Suite by Jean Sibelius. The Gustavus Wind Orchestra will be led by Conductor James Patrick Miller and will open with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Procession of Nobles from Mlada. They will continue with two works by Vincent Persichetti — Round Me Falls the Night and the second movement of Symphony No. 6 for Band — before concluding with Dan Welcher’s Zion. The 2016 Family Weekend Concert will end with a performance by the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band under the direction of Dave Stamps. The jazz ensemble will perform It Had to be You by Isham Jones and Gus Kahn, Evidence by Thelonious Monk and Bli Blip by Duke Ellington.
In addition to worship and the concert, the Hillstrom Museum of Art will be open to visitors from 1:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The current exhibition is Animal and Sporting Paintings in the Penkhus Collection: The Very English Ambience of It All, which includes sixty-one fine artworks from the remarkable and impressive collection of Dr. Stephen and Mrs. Martha Penkhus of Mankato, Minnesota. The exhibition provides detailed glimpses into the English countryside, its occupants, and their activities, from around 1800 to the present. Works in the exhibit feature images of racing, pets, hunting, and prized livestock including cattle and, especially, horses.
All of the Family Weekend activities are open to the public. Tickets are not required for worship, the concert or the art exhibition. Brunch tickets, for those on campus for lunch on Sunday, can be purchased at check-out in the Evelyn Young Dining Center.
