Buckstead Leads Philharmonic Concert at Gustavus

Brian Buckstead, conductor of the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra, will lead the ensemble in its annual fall concert in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall on Friday, November 21, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission to this Department of Music presentation is free and open to the public.

Brian Buckstead, conductor of the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra, will lead the ensemble in its annual fall concert in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall on Friday, November 21, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission to this Department of Music presentation is free and open to the public.

The twenty-six member Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra will open this performance with the five movement L’Orfeo – Sinfonie e Ritornelli by Claudio Monteverdi. Conductor Buckstead then brings his violin to the stage to perform Arcangelo Corelli’s Sonata in D minor, Op. 5, No. 12. For the Corelli work, Gustavus organist David Fienen will join the soloist. The ensemble returns to present Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 6 in E-flat major and conclude the program with the Concerto Grosso ‘La Follia’ by Francesco Geminiani. For the concerto, violinists Amara Berthelsen and Gretchen Sands, violist Mark Wamma and ‘cellist Kevin Horn will be featured as soloists.

Friday’s performance in Bjorling Recital Hall begins at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
