The Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College is pleased to present emeritus faculty member John McKay in a piano recital, Saturday, March 19, 7:30 p.m., in Bjorling Recital Hall. This recital is free and open to the public.
John McKay retired this past spring after 28 years as a member of the Gustavus Department of Music. He is an avid teacher and performer both in the solo and chamber genre. While on faculty at Gustavus, he presented all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in 9 recitals and, with violinist Mary Horozaniecki, presented all 10 of Beethoven’s violin sonatas. He is founder and director of the Minnesota Valley Sommarfest and has been honored by the Minnesota State Arts Board for his service to music in the community.
For this recital, McKay has selected works by Mozart, FANTASIA IN C MINOR; Ravel’s five-movement MIROIRS; and Chopin’s BALLADE NO. 3 IN A FLAT MAJOR, OP. 47. He opens the second half of his recital with Griffes’ TWO EXCERPTS FROM ROMAN SKETCHES and concludes the recital with Rachmaninoff’s FIVE PRELUDES.
A reception follows Saturday’s recital and will be presented in the recital hall lobby. The recital is free and open to the public.
