Student Recital Weekend at Gustavus Posted on March 14th, 2005 by

The Department of Music at Gustavus Adophus College is pleased to present a weekend of student recitals March 18 and 19 in Bjorling Recital Hall. Performances will be given by Josh Carlson, percussion, March 18 at 7:30 p.m., Dana Barron, flute, March 19 at 1:30 p.m., and Anna Sietsema, piano and Shannon Schultze, ‘cello, combining efforts on March 19 at 3:30 p.m. These recitals are free and open to the public.

Joshua Carlson opens the weekend on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. with his senior percussion recital. For the recital, Mr. Carlson has selected works for snare drum, timpani, xylophone and drum set. He will be assisted by pianist Laura Johnson and percussionists Seth Hayek and Justin Haaheim. Josh is a senior music major and a 2001 graduate of Wayzata High School in Plymouth. He is the son of Barbara and Samuel Carlson of Greenfield, Minnesota and is a member of the Gustavus Wind and Symphony Orchestra and the Gustavus Percussion Ensemble.

Dana Barron begins her recital at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. She is a senior music honors in performance major and a 2001 graduate of Guttenberg (Iowa) High School. She is the daughter of Sandy and John Barron. At Gustavus, Ms. Barron is a member of both the Gustavus Wind Orchestra and the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra. She will be assisted by pianist Coni Liljengren, Anna Stenson, violin and Warren Friesen, viola. For her recital, she has selected three works. She will open the recital with Bach’s PARTITA IN A MINOR FOR SOLO FLUTE, followed by the SERENADE FOR FLUTE, VIOLIN AND VIOLA by Ludwig van Beethoven. The final work on the program is SONATA FOR FLUTE AND PIANO IN D MAJOR by Sergei Prokofiev.

At 3:30 p.m., Ana Sietsema, piano and Shannon Schultze, ‘cello, present their combined junior recital. Ms. Sietsema is a 2002 graduate of Chisago Lakes High School and the daughter of Joy and Rodney Sietsema of Lindstrom. She is a double major in music and Latin and, as a French horn player, is a member of the Gustavus Wind Orchestra and the Gustavus Brass Choir. Shannon Schultze is a 2002 graduate of Rochester’s John Marshall High School and the daughter of Edith and Mark Schultze. Shannon opens the recital with Bach’s SUITE FOR UNACCOMPANIED ‘CELLO NO. 3, followed by Ana’s performance of Beethoven’s SONATA IN A MAJOR, OP. 2, NO. 2. Shannon continues with Haydn’s ‘CELLO CONCERTO NO 1 IN C MAJOR, accompanied by pianist Jonas Carlson. Two works for piano follow, SONATINE by Maurice Ravel and Chopin’s WALTZ IN D-FLAT MAJOR, performed by Ana Sietsema. The final work of the program combines the talents of both musicians as they present the three movement PIECES IN FOLK STYLE, OP. 102 by Robert Schumann.

All three recitals are free and open to the public. Receptions follow each performance in the recital hall lobby.
