Stauffer and Sowden prepare for senior recital

Student recitals by clarinetist Rachel Braband and pianists Beth Stauffer and Phil Sowden are set for March 23 and 24 at Gustavus Adolphus College’s Jussi Björling Recital Hall. Braband’s recital begins at 7:30, Friday, March 23 and the Stauffer and Sowden joint recital begins at 3:30 on Saturday, March 24.

Rachel Braband, a junior music performance major from Lombard, Illinois, will be accompanied by St. Peter pianist Bonnie Jorgensen as she presents her junior clarinet recital. She opens the program with Three Romances for Clarinet in A by Robert Schumann and follows with a solo work by clarinet by Heinrich Sutermeister, the Capriccio for Solo Clarinet in A. Ms. Braband concludes Friday’s recital with the Allegro and Romanze movements from Von Weber’s Concerto No. 2 in Eb Major, Op. 74.

Beth Stauffer opens Saturday’s senior piano recital at 3:30 with the Prelude and Fugue in D Minor by J. S. Bach, the Impromptu No. 1 in A-flat Major, Op. 29 by Frederic Chopin. Her program includes two works by Claude Debussy, Minstrels and Bruyeres from Preludes. She completes her solo program with Alberto Ginastera’s three-movement Danzas Argentinas.

The solo works selected by Phil Sowden for the recital include Franz Schubert’s Impromptu in E-flat Major, Op. 20, Bach’s Toccata in E minorand Burnt Fingers from William Albright’s Three Novelty Rags. Saturday’s recital concludes with a two piano work performed by Stauffer and Sowden titled Suite No. 2 in C minor, Op. 17 and written by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Both events are free and open to the public. The recitals will be followed by a reception for the performers in the lobby of Bjorling Recital Hall.
