The Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College will present a tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach on Saturday, February 23 in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. The All-Bach performance will feature members of the Department of Music, Yumiko Oshima-Ryan, Esther Wang and David Fienen. Saturday’s performance begins at 4:30 p.m. in the recital hall and is free and open to the public.
Saturday’s recital follows a day of auditions in the department by members of next year’s first-year class for the Jussi Björling Music Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded each year to incoming students who plan to study music with members of the department.
The performance is a tribute to the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and specifically to the piano music of the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book One. Oshima-Ryan, Wang and Fienen will each present a number of selections from that well-known work. During the performance, projections of selections from Book One and images of the composer will be projected on the stage. Members of the audience will be given the opportunity to follow passages from the works as they are being performed.
Saturday’s concert is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the 4:30 recital in the lobby.
