It is tradition at Gustavus Adolphus College for senior art and art history majors to have their work displayed at the College’s Hillstrom Museum of Art in the Spring. This winter, those seniors will also have the opportunity to show off some of their work in Waseca, Minn., a town 35 miles southeast of St. Peter.

Nine Gustavus seniors will have their work displayed at the Waseca Art Center from Jan. 7 through Feb. 11. The opening reception for the exhibition is Friday, Jan. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The students who will have their work displayed include Anna Ahlbrecht, Elise Biewen, Michelle Dietz, James Ebeling, Kacie Johnson, Kelly Mathewson, Ahmed Mohamed, Kaitlyn Peterson, and Nicole Tetrault.
“This show was intended to give students the experience of showing their work outside the College in a professional gallery,” Assistant Professor of Art and Art History Kristen Lowe said. “The Waseca Art Center is very committed to bringing new and diverse art to smaller venues in the rural Midwest.”
The pieces of art that will be displayed in Waseca have all been crafted this fall in conjunction with the art and art history department’s Senior Seminar course, which Lowe teaches. The course is a required two-semester seminar that provides the beginning of a professional orientation towards art. The course emphasizes the development of the individual artistic statement, and includes preparation of the senior exhibition and written statement of purpose, group critiques of student work, readings and discussion of contemporary esthetic issues, and resume and slide portfolio preparation.
