“Songs From a Woman’s Life” Recital Sunday

Sunday, October 17, brings Soprano Christina Smith to the Jussi Björling stage for a performance of "Songs From a Woman's Life," a collection of music she has performed which gives a glimpse into the life and mind of different women. With Pianist Bonnie Jorgensen, Smith presents her "Songs" at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.

Sunday Concert Highlights Family Weekend

Performances by the combined ensembles of the Department of Music highlight the annual Family Weekend festivities on Sunday, October 10. More than 350 students from 10 ensembles will participate during Morning Worship, the Jazz Brunch and the Family Weekend Concert.

Artist Mike Johnson ’10 Awarded Highpoint Center Internship

As Mike Johnson approached graduation in May, 2010, he wasn't intimidated by the lack of internships or other opportunities in his field: the graphic arts. Nor was he concerned that other fields had more openings available. He continued to watch for options and followed websites of companies whose reputations he knew and respected. His patience, along with some serious research, paid off.

A Culinary Cabaret: Nobel Conference Concert 2010

Following the tradition of presenting a concert in Christ Chapel which complements the annual Nobel Conference, the Department of Music will present Making Food Good: Courses in a Culinary Cabaret on Tuesday, October 5, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The players include members of the faculty and student musicians in solo and ensemble performances guaranteed to make your mouth water! A Culinary Cabaret is free and open to the public.

Sweet & Kapla Duo Piano Recital Sunday at Gustavus

Julie Sweet, pianist and accompanist at Gustavus Adolphus College, and Joseph Kapla, a collaborative pianist and instructor in the Twin Cities, join forces Sunday, October 3 for a Duo Piano Recital on the Jussi Björling stage at Gustavus. The performance includes The Hallejuah Junction by John Adams, the Sonata in F minor for 2 Pianos by Johnnes Brahms and Le carnaval des animeaux par Camille Saint-Saëns. The recital begins at 3:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Comedian Scott Novotny Coming Home for Homecoming

Scott Novotny, the national comedian most frequently referred to as the new Robin Williams, returns to Gustavus as part of the College's Homecoming weekend festivities. Novotny, the comedian, actor, writer and teacher brings his "laugh out loud" act filled with family friendly characters, jokes, dancing, props, improvisation and physical comedy to the Björling Recital Hall stage Saturday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at gustavustickets.com and will be available for sale at the door.

Trombone Quartet Features MN Orch Players Sunday

The Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College is pleased to present the Westside Trombone Quartet and their special guest artists Kari Sundstrom and Doug Wright of the Minnesota Orchestra on Sunday, September 26 beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall.Admission to this guest artist concert is free and open to the public.

John McKay Returns for Piano Recital Sunday

Long-time professor of music at Gustavus Adolphus College, pianist John McKay, returns to Jussi Björling Recital Hall to present an All-Chopin Recital celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederic Chopin. The McKay All-Chopin Recital begins at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 26 in Björling Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

Gustavus’ MacCarthy and Students Present “Thrill Me” in St. Paul

Thrill Me: The Story of Leopold and Loeb, a musical directed by Gustavus Adolphus College Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance Henry MacCarthy will be performed at the Lowry Lab Theater in St. Paul beginning Thursday, Sept. 16. Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Sept. 16, 17, and 18 as well as a 3 p.m. matinee performance on Sept. 19.

Brian Evans ’07 Wins Minnesota SAGE Award

Brian Evans, Class of 2007, now in his fourth season with the Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater Company, has won the 2010 SAGE Award in the category of "Outstanding Performer." The winners were announced at the annual Minnesota SAGE Awards Dinner on September 14 at the Southern Theatre in Minneapolis.
