The Gustavus Faculty Jazz and the Department of Music welcome guest pianist Jim Whitman and senior percussionist Andrew Evans for a special evening of jazz on Friday, March 11 in Björling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. The quintet performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Friday’s performance includes a combination of jazz standards and contemporary compositions. Among the works to be performed by the quintet are such well-known works as Days of Wine and Roses, All the Things You Are, Girl from Ipanema, Satin Doll and Take the A Train and newer works such as Nuage, Yesterdays, I Can’t Get Started, Night and Day and others.
The Gustavus Faculty Jazz welcome jazz pianist Jim Whitman as guest artist for Friday’s performance. Jim has been performing in Minnesota since the early 80s and has played most of the major hotels and jazz clubs in the Twin Cities and suburbs, such as The Dakota, The Artists Quarter, Suzette’s and most recently Rossi’s Blue Star Jazz Room in Minneapolis. Previous to coming to Minnesota, Whitman fronted and performed with various trios and larger groups in California and Nevada, playing the clubs along the Sunset Strip in Hollywood and several years at the Sands in Las Vegas where he backed up, on occasion, Nat Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., and Bobby Darrin. Whitman also worked for Harrah’s Clubs in Reno and Lake Tahoe, Nevada where he was a regular performer. He currently performs in the Twin Cities and Mankato with his Trio and as a solo artist.
Other performers on Friday’s concert include Steve Wright, trumpet & flugelhorn; James McGuire, guitar; Rick Orpen, bass; and senior Andrew Evans, drums. The performance opens at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
