Freelance flutist and member of the Gustavus Department of Music Emily Sapa will present a faculty flute recital beginning at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, March 20 in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. For this performance, Ms. Sapa will be assisted by a number of friends including pianist Leah Siltberg, soprano Jennifer French and violist Valerie Little. This recital is free and open to the public.

The performance opens with Sonatina in D major by Radamés Gnattali and In Memoriam: Three Songs for soprano and flute, composed by William P. Dougherty to the poetry by Patricia Shinehouse. Carl Vine’s Sonata for flute and piano precedes a brief intermission. The recital continues with four movements from Nketia’s Republic Suite, followed by the Suite for Children by Asako Hirabayashi and concludes with the Trio for flute, viola and piano by Bohuslav Martinu.

Flutist Emily Sapa is an active freelance musician and teacher in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. She received her master of music degree from the University of Minnesota, studying with Immanuel Davis, and her bachelors degrees in music and English from Drake University. Ms. Sapa is a founding member of Pavia Winds and principal flutist with the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra. She is currently flute instructor at Gustavus, Minnesota State University, Mankato, and Martin Luther College, New Ulm and maintains a private studio in Minneapolis and at St. Joseph’s School of Music in St. Paul.

Sunday’s faculty recital by flutist Emily Sapa begins at 3:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall and is free and open to the public.
