Performances by the St. Ansgar’s Men’s Chorus and the Gustavus Chamber Singers close another weekend of performances with their spring concert in Jussi Björling Recital Hall on Sunday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. Both ensembles are directed by Rod Urtel and are free and open to the public.

Director Urtel has programmed the performance to open with the St. Ansgar’s Chorus. With accompanist Bonnie Jorgensen, the men will sing a program that includes traditional standards, spirituals and other sacred works, and works from Broadway musicals. Among the works to be performed in the concert are Keith Christopher’s Gloria, the traditional spiritual Steal Away arranged by Brazeal Dennard, If Music Be the Food of Love by Mankato composer David Dickau, and The Man of La Mancha from I, Don Quixote by Mich Leigh and Joe Darion.

The Gustavus Chamber Singers follow the men’s chorus with a variety of jazz standards and works from musicals. Their program will include Will Hudson’s Moonglow and the Gershwin classic Embraceable You along with Stormy Weather by Koehler and Arlen. The performance continues with I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, Wanting Memories by Ysaye M. Barnwell and concludes with I Got Rhythm by George and Ira Gershwin.

Sunday’s vocal performance by the St. Ansgar’s Chorus and the Gustavus Chamber Singers is free and open to the public. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall.
