The 2011 Gustavus OcTUBAfest

Gustavus’ annual OcTUBAfest, featuring compositions for tuba and euphonium by student musicians, will hit the Jussi Björling stage at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, October 29. Saturday’s concert includes six new compositions by Gustavus students. The performance is free and open to the public.

The 2011 OcTUBAfest opens with Divergence by Scott Doebler, tuba, and Point A Prime for euphonium by Ben Thrash. Shift by Jill Smith (tuba) and Extemporization by Beth Hauer for euphonium. The concert concludes with a final work for tuba, Time’s Call, by Erik Carlson and The Euphoric Euphonium by Brian Westerbur.

The annual concert is “all about creativity” according to low brass instructor Paul Budde.  “Each of the pieces to be performed is an original composition created by the performer specifically for this concert.  As a part of this process, students were challenged to create moods or emotions in their compositions, using both their instruments and a newly-composed accompaniment track generated through the software GarageBand®.  These accompaniment tracks will be broadcast over the sound system during performances.  All solos include both pre-planned/written components as well as sections that are entirely improvised on stage.”

OcTUBAfest is free and open to the public. The performance begins in Jussi Björling Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 29.
