Gustavus Adolphus College’s annual Family Weekend is timed perfectly this fall with a wide schedule of music events and art exhibitions complementing the spectacular fall colors across campus. Family Weekend events are scheduled on campus beginning Friday, October 10 and running through Sunday, October 12.

The Hillstrom Museum of Art will be open for viewing of its current exhibition, “Pull Left, Not Always Right” on display Saturday and Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The Hillstrom is located in the lower level of the Jackson Student Center and admission is free. The exhibition highlights fifteen young Chinese artists, working in a wide variety of media and styles, who have become global art makers and who reflect on everyday life in their art.

Schaefer Gallery is hosting an exhibition of works by Mayumi Amada and will be open on Saturday and Sunday as well. The hours match the Hillstrom’s open hours and admission to the Schaefer Gallery, located in the upper level of the Schaefer Studio Arts Building, is also free.

Sunday’s schedule of events opens with Morning Worship in Christ Chapel at 10:30 a.m. and all are welcome. Contributing to Sunday’s worship are a number of musicians including the Lucia Singers, Brandon Dean, conductor; the Christ Chapel Brass, Heidi Johanna Miller, director; and the Christ Chapel Bells, Chad Winterfeldt, conductor.

At 11:00 a.m., the annual Family Weekend Jazz Brunch will open with the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble in the Evelyn Young Dining Room, followed by the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band. Both ensembles are under the direction of Dave Stamps. The combination of music and meal is hot and (if you wish) spicy. The brunch is a la carte with meals purchased in the Dining Center.

The Family Weekend Music Showcase will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Christ Chapel. Admission is free. Tickets are not required. The Showcase Concert will open with the Gustavus Choir, Gregory Aune, conductor; followed by the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ruth Lin, assisted by pianist Esther Wang. Conductor Karrin Meffert-Nelson will then bring the Vasa Wind Orchestra to the stage followed by the Choir of Christ Chapel and its conductor Brandon Dean. Sunday’s Family Weekend Showcase Concert will conclude with the Gustavus Wind Orchestra, James Patrick Miller, conductor.

After a busy beginning to October which has included many of these students in performances at the Inauguration of President Rebecca Bergman, Homecoming and the 50th Nobel Conference, it is a pleasure to offer these Family Weekend events to the Gustavus community. More than 500 student-musicians will participate in a variety of performances on Sunday bringing the very best of Gustavus to you. We hope you enjoy the weekend!
