In its first tour since 2019, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra departs for its 2022 Minnesota Tour on Thursday, January 27. Following the postponement of their international tour, the band will spend four days working with high schools across the state from Ramsey to Springfield, ending each day with a concert. A complete list of tour stops is below.
The concert revolves around the theme, Drawing Inspiration. “This theme evolved organically out of a collection of music that was circling in my mind and heart related to film, animation, imagery, and visual art,” says conductor James Patrick Miller. Aiming to lift-up underrepresented voices, the program features the music of two Black composers, Omar Thomas and Sydney Guillaume, an Indigenous/First Nation composer Brent Michael Davids, and Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo.
The band is also premiering the piece, “Flourishes,” by American composer and 10-time Emmy winner, Bruce Broughton. Broughton is best known for his work on movie scores like Tombstone, Miracle on 34th Street, and Silverado, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. Broughton will discuss his piece onstage before the home concert on February 12.
On tour, the Wind Orchestra will work with bands conducted by recent Gustavus graduates. Emma Silber ’19 conducts the PACT Charter High School Concert Band, Andy DeLuca ’19 conducts the Monticello High School Bands, and Erin Oberle ’20 conducts the Springfield High School Bands. All three are alumni of the Gustavus Wind Orchestra.
The program also features student soloists Anya Menk ’22 (voice and piano), Kyle Langer ’22 (trombone), Jessical Logue ’22 (bass clarinet) and Elizabeth Bergquist ’24 (cello).
Founded in 1878, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra is the oldest touring ensemble at Gustavus, performing both domestically and internationally. The band regularly collaborates with well-known composers and conductors, commissioning and premiering new works. Previously, the group has traveled to Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Sweden, and Norway.
All performances are free of charge, no ticket required.
