Fine Arts Preview: March 7 – March 13This week features a the Honor Orchestra Festival, a new arts exhibition at the Schaefer Art Gallery, and the Arts Administration Salons Series.

This week features a concert showcasing the Gustavus Wind Orchestra, the Gustavus Wind Symphony, and the Chamber Winds, the Bjorling Honor Orchestra Concert, and a  recital by David Kozisek. The Arts Administration Salon Series has its first session on Tuesday with  a variety of guest speakers and performers. The Arts and Arts History Deparment present a new exhibition by artist McInnisDress – Shopping at the Salvation Army Family Store and Donation Center , and the continuation of the Hillstrom Museum exhibit: Fevzi Yazici: DARK WHITE.

The Arts Administration Salon Series

The Arts Administration Salons Series are open to every fine arts major and minor. These salons are designed to give you a chance to meet the faculty, network with your peers, experience visual and performing arts expos, and learn more about all of the different facets of the arts administration and cultural leadership workscape.

Bjorling Honors Orchestra Concert

The Honor Orchestra Festival brings high school students across Minnesota to Gustavus Adolphus College. The event features faculty clinics, workshops for teachers, rehearsals, and a concert in Christ Chapel. The evening concert listed here, features the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and the Honor ensemble, directed by Dr. Ruth Lin.

The Gustavus Department of Music is proud to present voice faculty David Kozisek for a spring recital. The performance will feature Gustavus voice professor Anna DeGraff and Matthew McFarlane on piano. A digital program will be added closer to the performance date.

Max McInnis Is a furniture designer and sculptor based out of St Paul, Minnesota. Born and raised in Davenport, Iowa Max went on to study furniture design at the Rhode Island School of Design. And works out of their studio in St Paul today. They have had the distinct pleasure to show their work in Detroit, Minneapolis, Providence, and New York City.

Hillstrom Museum- Fevzi Yazici: DARK WHITE

Fevzi Yazici: DARK WHITE features 45 drawings by imprisoned Turkish journalist and artist Fevzi Yazici (b. 1972).  The artist served as the design director of Istanbul’s Zamannewspaper until 2016 when the Turkish government closed down the paper and Yazici and colleagues were imprisoned as part of that crackdown on freedom of the press following a coup attempt against the government party.  Yazici was originally sentenced to life in prison on terrorism charges but in 2019 the Turkish Supreme Court reduced his sentence to 11 years and 3 months. Exhibit closes on April 24, 2022.
