Minnesota artists Holly Swift and Linda Gammel bring their recent works in an exhibition, Amidst Trees, to the Schaefer Gallery on the Gustavus campus. The exhibition of paintings, drawings and photography from the natural world opens April 9 and runs through May 25. The gallery is open daily from 9-5 and on weekend from noon to 5. Admission is free.
Essayist Margot Fortunato Galt describes Gammel and Swift as “intrepid. They explore winter forests where they evoke images of terrible beauty. They encourage us to come with them, to shed our comfortable skins and enter a slow wearing away of certainties, as part of their artful reconstruction of ancient depths and lights. . . . Amidst Trees celebrates a wide variety of Minnesota woods and orchards, from Lake Superior’s North Shore, to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, to the orchards on the bluffs above Lake Pepin.”
The Gammel/Swift exhibition is part of a three-day interdisciplinary residency which includes class lectures in art/art history, a workshop open to students in English, Chemistry and Studio Arts, an open discussion with the two artists and Gustavus faculty Joyce Sutphen, Scott Burr and Kristen Lowe, and a student exhibit exploring the creative process as part of the workshop. It is funded by the Gustavus Artist Series, the Johnson Endowment for the Arts and the Department of Art/Art History.
