Two senior recitals set the stage for music at Gustavus this weekend as Erik Mahon, trumpet and Susan Engberg, piano present solo recitals in Björling Recital Hall. Mahon, a native of Littleton, Colorado, is accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 14. Engberg follows on Sunday, March 15 with a recital beginning at 3:30 p.m. Both performances are free and open to the public.
Erik Mahon opens the weekend with his recital at 1:30 p.m. on March 8. Accompanied by pianist Beth Winterfeldt and assisted by a number of fellow students, Mahon opens with Handel’s Suite in D. Major and Kent Kennan’s Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. Moving to fluegelhorn, he continues with the “Vesperale” movement from Claude Bolling’s Toot Suite for Trumpet and Jazz Piano. With assistance from the Christ Chapel Brass Quintet, Mahon will perform Quintet No. 1, op. 5 for Brass Quintet by Victor Ewald. He concludes his senior recital with Clifford Brown’s Sandu.
Mounds View High School graduate and Arden Hills resident Susan Engberg presents her senior piano recital on Sunday, March 15 beginning at 3:30 in Bjorling Recital Hall. Engberg opens with the Rachmaninoff Prelude in G Minor and Liebestraum No. 3 by Franz Liszt. Joined by soprano Katie Kammerude, she continues with Good Morning Baltimore written by Mark Shaiman and Scott Wittman, followed by another solo work for piano by Claude Debussy, Pour le piano. Vocalist Brita Gilyard and Susan Engberg then collaborate on Er, der Herrlichste von allen by Robert Schumann. Engberg concludes her senior recital with Etude in D-sharp minor by Alexander Scriabin and George Winston’s Rain.
Both recitals this weekend are free and open to the public. Receptions for the musicians will be held in the recital hall lobby following the performance.
