Gustavus Adolphus College Department of Music will present a fall concert by its two symphony orchestras, Saturday, November 13, at 3:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. This concert, directed by Warren Friesen, is free and open to the public.
Following a concert season which included a concert tour of China and a performance of the NOBEL SYMPHONY with Philip Brunelle’s VocalEssence at Minneapolis’ Orchestra Hall, Warren Friesen, in his fifth year as director of the chamber music program at Gustavus, opens the orchestras’ new season with this performance by the Gustavus Symphony and the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestras.
The Philharmonic opens the concert with a performance of Ernst Bloch’s CONCERTO GROSSO. After a short pause, the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra will take the stage to present Rimsky-Korsakov’s CAPRICCIO ESPAGNOLA and Johannes Brahms’ SYMPHONY NO. 2.
Other performances by the orchestras this fall include participation in the annual celebration of Christmas in Christ Chapel, followed by a concert tour of the string orchestra in January. A special event planned for the spring includes New York Philharmonic Orchestra principal oboist, Joseph Robinson. The performance at Arbor Day presents Jean Francaix’s FLOWER CLOCK, a work combining music and memorializing the work of Carl Linnaeus, the Swedish botanist whose work to classify plant life on the planet is the centerpiece of the Linnaeus Arboretum on the Gustavus campus.
Saturday’s concert is free and open to the public.
