2013 Gustavus Summer Music Strings Institute

The summer of 2013 welcomes the 2nd annual Gustavus Summer Music Strings Institute opens its doors July 16 – 22 in the Schaefer Fine Arts Center. Information and registration for this 6-day, intensive string study institute, led by Dr. Justin Knoepfel and other members of the Gustavus Department of Music, is available online at www.gustavus.edu/camps/stringinstitute

Gustavus Symphony Presents Competition Winners

With the 2013 commencement service only hours away, the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Ruth Lin will present the Department of Music's season finale concert featuring the winners of the 2013 Gustavus Concerto/Aria Competition, Saturday, June 1 at 8:00 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall in the Schaefer Fine Arts Center. This year's winners include three graduating seniors who won the honor of performing in the finale concert through an audition held in February. The soloists are Taylor Frey, violin; Elizabeth Hauer, euphonium and Ben Whalen, trombone. Tickets are not required for this performance and the concert is open to the public.

Spring BRASSWORKS! Concert Sunday

The annual combined brass ensembles BRASSWORKS! concert will be presented by the Department of Music at Gustavus on Sunday, May 19, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Björling Recital Hall. Sunday's performance will include selections by the Christ Chapel Brass, the Trombone Choir, the Trumpet Ensemble, the One Hit Wonder Horn Quartet, the Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and the Fanfare Brass and Percussion. This performance is open to the public at no charge.

Philharmonic’s Spring Concert Features Guest Harpist

The Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Justin Knoepfel will present their spring concert in Jussi Björling Recital Hall on Saturday, May 18 beginning at 1:30 p.m. This performance will feature the talents of the members of the ensemble along with guest harpist, Phala Tracy, adjunct instructor of music at Gustavus and the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis. This performance is free and open to the public.

Handbells Ring in Weekend in Christ Chapel

The combined handbell choirs of Christ Chapel and the Department of Music will present a spring concert in Christ Chapel on Friday, May 17, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Under the direction of Chad Winterfeldt, the Christ Chapel Bells and the Christ Chapel Ringers, along with two smaller ensembles, will join to present this concert. The performance is free and open to the public.

Tim Grev to Present Senior Trumpet Recital on Sunday

The Music Department at Gustavus Adolphus College presents Tim Grev in his senior trumpet recital on Sunday, May 19, at 3:30 p.m. in Bjorling Recital Hall. He will be accompanied by pianist Bonnie Jorgensen and assisted by members of the Trumpet Quartet and the Christ Chapel Brass. The public is invited to this recital.

Choir of Christ Chapel Home Concert Wednesday

For fifty years, the Choir of Christ Chapel has been at the center of faith exploration and music expression in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. In addition to providing special music and serving to promote the mission of Christ Chapel and the College, the Choir has toured annually throughout the U.S. to connect students and congregations alike with the rich musical heritage of the Lutheran Church. After returning from this spring's concert tour, the Choir of Christ Chapel, under the direction of Dr. Brandon Dean, will present its Home Concert in Christ Chapel on Wednesday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. The Choir will be accompanied by pianist Bonnie Jorgensen and violinist Taylor Frey. Admission to the concert is free, tickets are not required.

Anderson Theatre Rounds Out 2012-13 Season with Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Gustavus Adolphus College is proud to present the finishing act of its 2012-13 season with Machinal, a groundbreaking American Expressionist play by Sophie Treadwell, directed by Amy Seham. Performances of Machinal will be presented in Anderson Theatre May 9-11 at 8:00 p.m. and May 12 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for all four performances are available online at www.gustavustickets.com or by calling the Gustavus Ticket Center at (507) 933-7590. Tickets remaining unsold on the day of the performance will go on sale at the Anderson Theatre box office one hour prior to show time.
