Two members of the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College will present a joint recital on Friday, March 10, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall on the Gustavus campus. This free concert will be presented by Steve Wright, trumpet and Yumiko Oshima-Ryan, piano, and assisted by Rick Orpen, Jim McGuire and Gary Gauger.
Wright, director of jazz studies and trumpet, and Oshima-Ryan, one of Gustavus’ piano studio professors, will open the recital with Halsey Stevens’ Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. Following the sonata, Oshima-Ryan will return to the stage to present the solo piano work Litany, a work written by Toru Takemitsu in memory of Michael Vyner.
Steve Wright then returns and, with the assistance of Rick Orpen, professor of music, will present a new work written by the two performers and titled Tiesivorpmi II for Trumpet & Percussion. Orpen then moves from percussion to bass guitar to perform a set of works for jazz combo with Steve Wright. Joining the trumpet and (now) bass duo on stage are Gustavus guitar instructor, Jim McGuire, and Minneapolis-based drummer, Gary Gauger. The selections for this set will be announced from the stage and will include solo works by each member of the combo.
A reception will be given for all the musicians in the recital hall lobby following the performance. The recital begins at 7:30 p.m. in Jussi Bjorling Recital and is free and open to the public.
