Gustavus Symphony Orchestra to Present Season Finale Saturday

The Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Warren Friesen, will present the Gustavus Adolphus College Department of Music’s season finale, Saturday, May 26, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in Christ Chapel. This final performance includes solo performances by three concerto competition winners, Christopher Fogderud, trumpet, Katherine Johns, saxophone and Justin Schramm, marimba.

The symphony opens Saturday’s finale concert with Jean Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, Op. 11, followed by Aleksandr Arutiunyan’s Trumpet Concerto, performed by Bismarck senior Christopher Fogderud. Katherine Johns, a senior music major from Cedar Falls, Iowa, continues with the first movement of Pierre Max Dubois’ Saxophone Concerto.

Senior music education major Justin Schramm from Jackson, Wisconsin, then takes center stage as he performs two movements of Paul Creston’s Marimba Concertino with the orchestra. The concert concludes with the symphony’s performance of Ottorino Respighi’s The Pines of Rome.

Saturday’s season finale by the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra begins at 8:00 p.m. in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
