Student Recitals Fill Weekend with Music at Gustavus

Three student recitals of bassoon, voice and flute, sponsored by the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College, are scheduled for this weekend on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. The recitals, Jessica Gehrke, bassoon; Hannah Wunsch, voice; and Brittany Krusemark, flute, are free and open to the public.

Three student recitals of bassoon, voice and flute, sponsored by the Department of Music at Gustavus Adolphus College, are scheduled for this weekend on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. The recitals, Jessica Gehrke, bassoon; Hannah Wunsch, voice; and Brittany Krusemark, flute, are free and open to the public.

Bassoonist and pianist Jessica Gehrke from Sleepy Eye opens the schedule with her senior recital at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, November 17 in the recital hall. Her program includes Marcel Poot’s Ballade and Gabriel Pierne’s Solo de Concert for bassoon. She continues with Beethoven’s Sonata in C minor, Op. 13, better known as “Pathetique,” and concludes the recital with two movements from an untitled composition by P.D.Q. Bach for bassoon and piano, in which both parts of the duet are played by the recitalist: one bassoon, one piano and two hands.

Soprano Hannah Wunsch, senior from Omaha, Nebraska, takes the stage at 3:30 p.m. Saturday to present her voice recital with pianist Sam Eckberg. Her program includes a wide variety of works for soprano from Handel, Brahms, Faure and Mozart to Copland and Ricky Ian Gordon. She will be joined on stage by the Gustavus Cantorum to present Flora Gave Me Fairest Flowers by Thomas Wilbye and Now is the Month of Maying by Thomas Morley.

Mankato area flutist Brittany Krusemark will present her senior recital on Sunday, November 18, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Jussi Björling Recital Hall. A 2004 graduate of Mankato West High School, Ms. Krusemark will present her recital with accompanist Ricky Fong. She opens the recital with Night Soliloquy by Kent Kennan, followed by three movements of Bach’s Sonata No. 1, MWV 1030. She continues with the Histoire du Tango for flute and guitar by Astor Piazzolla with guitarist Jim Reinhartson. The program concludes with Fantasie for Flute and Piano by Georges Hue.

The three recitals are free and open to the public. They will be followed by receptions for the performers in the recital hall lobby.
